STAR interview answer checker for Australian interviews.
Paste a behavioural question and your draft answer. You get a score out of ten against the STAR structure, the four checks it passed or failed, and the weakest line quoted back with what to do about it.
What the STAR method actually scores
Australian interview panels, especially in government, health and education, usually score answers against a written rubric rather than holding a conversation. Four things decide most of it.
01
Situation and task
Set in a sentence or two. Enough context to follow, without the setup eating the answer.
02
Action, as 'I' not 'we'
What you personally did. A panel cannot score a contribution it cannot separate from the group.
03
A measurable result
What changed, ideally with a number. Not that the task was completed, but what was different afterwards.
04
Spoken length
Roughly ninety seconds to two minutes said out loud. Much shorter and there is no evidence; much longer and the panel loses the thread.
Common questions
What is the STAR method?
A four part answer structure: situation, task, action, result. You set the scene in a sentence or two, say what you specifically had to do, spend most of the answer on what you did, and finish with what changed. This checker assesses a draft answer against that structure.
How do I answer behavioural interview questions using the STAR method?
Keep the situation and task brief, roughly the first fifth of the answer. Spend most of the time on the action, described as what you personally did rather than what the team did. Finish with a measurable result. The full guide is linked below, with worked examples.
Why does it check for 'I' instead of 'we'?
Panels are scoring an individual, and a team based answer gives them nothing to attribute to you specifically. This is the single most common reason a good answer scores poorly, and it usually comes from good instincts about crediting a team fairly.
Does this replace practising out loud?
No. Knowing what to say and being able to say it smoothly under a bit of pressure are different skills. This checks the content of a written draft; CVelo's interview coach lets you practise saying it, with scored spoken feedback on Pro.
Do you keep the answer I paste?
No. The text is sent to our AI provider for assessment and is not kept by us. It is never sold. We never use it to train AI, and our AI provider is contractually barred from doing so.
